Textbook delays at Beach High
Textbook delays caused by missing book orders at the end of last school year and a reduced budget for education, is now forcing some AP students at Miami Beach Senior High to use other sources for information in their classes.
According to assistant principal of curriculum, Jodi Robins, who is one of the people in charge of textbooks, Miami Beach High did not receive book orders at the end of last school year and the school is still waiting for the last once. A problem is that the budget for education is reduced this year compared to last year. Robins said that the school doesn’t have the money to do the job they really want to do
“This problem is a combination of increased enrollment, because we had about two hundred extra kids coming in the door this year, that we did not expect and that we have very little money because of the budget cut” Robins explained. In an article written in Miami Herald august 25, this year’s budget is less than half the size of last year. The budget does not include money for major projects or new schools. Robins said that this has never been a problem before, and that it became an issue at the end of last year and a little bit the years before.
Miami Beach High has been in contact with another school that had declining enrollments and extra books and they said that Beach High could borrow their books, but the contact from the other school has not yet replied. American History and AP Psychology teacher, William Presswood, said that many students don’t even use their books and they sometimes can be a waste of money, but the situation is sad for the student who actually uses the books to study.
”While the students are waiting for the books, they are using articles and hand-outs from the teachers.”
“I expected to get the books the first week or at least during the first two weeks,” said Junior, Edgardo Barriga. “I have only gotten two books out of the six that I need.”
“There are few orders in process right now. I know I am waiting for a two AP sets, but nothing other than that” Robins explained “We also have to decide how to divide the books. Is I have 100 books and 100 students divided in two classes, to most convenient way to divide the book would be 50 on each, because then the students have at least a set of book to use in class.
According to Presswood, hopefully the books will be here soon and the students at Miami Beach Senior High can continue with this school year with all the supplies and books they need.
